[PROGRAM] ![]() RATINGS: [EC] [SP] [CS] [CM] [TP] [EM] [MD] Program Description Law enforcement officers, Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) personnel, emergency medical technicians (EMT), first and second responders and support personnel must be in top physical shape to perform their duties fully. But whose responsibility is it? The individual, command/management or someone else? How, exactly, should one go about achieving a consistent, sustainable, long-term worksite wellness program, taking into account the special needs, demands and duties of law enforcement and public safety? Many individuals in many areas are working actively on this problem. Using the groundwork that has already been laid, and using it as a foundation for your own customized program, can save law enforcement and public safety agencies a lot of time and trouble. Agencies can therefore begin reaping the benefits sooner, such as reducing sick leave and increasing fitness for duty. This LEAPS.TV program will open with some ideas on workplace wellness specifically for law enforcement and public safety with the National Sheriffs Association's medical advisor, Dr. Carlon M. Colker, MD, FACN who will discuss workplace health and wellness issues in a broad context and then quickly focus on areas of greatest interest to law enforcement and public safety, ranging from 911 dispatchers who sit in chairs all day to sheriffs' deputies and police officers out on the beat to emergency workers who must be prepared to work long shifts under grueling conditions. The next section of the program will consist of reports from practitioners, those who are involved in design, creation and implementation of wellness programs who will provide precise guidance on how viewers can begin a Healthy Worksite Initiative within your own agencies. The implementation experts are Lillian Ricardo, Health & Safety Project Coordinator for the National Volunteer Fire Council, Luann Pannell, Ph.D., Director, Police Training and Education for the Los Angeles Police Department and Guest Invited, Wellness Coordinator for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
